The Region: Hancock, New York
Hancock is a small, rural village located in Delaware County, New York. The village has a population of 1200. The area is economically distressed with approximately 15% of the population living below the poverty line. The region sits at the base of the western slopes of the Catskill Mountains. The area consists of over 700 miles of fishing streams, covered bridges, dairy farms, campsites and beautiful vistas with views of forests, waterways and mountains. The natural beauty of Hancock is juxtaposed with the severe lack of cultural and artistic resources available to its inhabitants. One of the goals of the corporation will be in constructing a theatre that will not only provide a needed haven for the arts but will also bring to the area, needed dollars for the community both directly and indirectly. The impact on the region will provide an outlet for artists and a source of jobs to help promote the region and ultimately decrease the numbers of unemployed.
